Is Flat Roofing The Future?
By Kustom Roofing September 13, 2023

The roofing industry is largely dictated by trends, not unlike fashion, cars, hairstyles, shopping, etc. In fact, most aspects of society rely on an element of consumer behaviour to influence the purchase decision process.

So, what are current roofing trends impacting contemporary homeowners’ choice of roofing choices?

The style of a roof is often representative of home designs that are in vogue at any given time, in any area. In modern architecture, there is an increasing tendency for homeowners to opt for flat roof designs for their home. The switch from traditional shapes to modern forms create a more deluxe, grand aesthetic, allowing a home stand out in the street.

Flat roofs are indicative of the recent minimalistic approach to new home builds. Formerly, this design choice was exclusive to larger, high budget homes. Now, the spike in flat roof popularity has resulted in it being accessible to all homeowners and new home builders.

While the rise in flat roof designs is due to its visual benefits, its structural efficiency is also a major factor. A flat roof delivers:

  • Cost. An overriding factor in any homeowner’s decision process, price. A flat roof can save you thousands due to its ease of installation, time, and lesser materials required.
  • Take advantage of the flat space. There is a lot more freedom with flat roofs. Not only can you easily install solar panels, you can place unsightly objects like air-con units off the ground and out of view. How you use your flat roof is up to you, but the opportunities are nearly endless.
  • Maintenance made easy. Cleaning your gutters, making repairs, and installing things is far easier and less expensive.

While a flat roof can improve the appeal and value of a home, there are a few common problems that must be considered before finalising your new roof decision.

  • Lack of drainage. Be careful when implementing a flat roof. Flat roofs often don’t allow for efficient water dispersal. Big storms can lead to water pooling, eventually turning into roof damage and potential leaks.
  • More maintenance/inspections. Even though a flat roof is more easily accessed than a pitched roof, they require more frequent inspections and maintenance due to their higher risk of damage from poorer drainage.

There are many pros and cons to flat roofing, as there is with any roofing option. There is no doubt they are currently on trend and the aesthetic appeal and low price point often outweighs the extra maintenance commitment.
